A British woman has died two days after a liposuction operation in Turkey that was supposed to remove excess fat removed from her hips.

Diarra Akua Eunice Brown, 28, visited an unnamed clinic in the suburb of Bahcelievler in the Turkish city of Istanbul for liposuction surgery on her hips on 22nd October.

The young woman was discharged a day later when she had no adverse reactions to the procedure, and returned to the clinic two days later for checks and to have the wound dressing changed.

According to the news site Sabah, she suddenly fell ill while the plastic surgeon, identified as S.G.B., was changing the dressing and her condition quickly deteriorated. Brown died later the same day.

An investigation has been launched after the incident and S.G.B. has been taken into police custody, according to reports in Turkey.

The surgeon said the British woman fell ill suddenly and has no idea what caused her death, according to the news site Haberler.

Following an examination at the city’s Forensic Medicine Institute, Brown’s body was sent back to the UK for burial.

The police investigation is ongoing.

Posting on Diarra’s Facebook page, a friend wrote: “This must be a dream. Still can’t come to terms with this yet.”

“I’m so heart broken,” another person said.

“My beautiful cousin. I will miss her, but I will cherish the memories of her,” a family member said.

Another person wrote: “What a beautiful young woman only God knows why she had to go so soon. Rest in peace my beautiful, funny, clever niece. The angels in heaven are celebrating your arrival.”

There are over 20 clinics in Bahcelievler, a large middle class residential suburb of Istanbul, on the European side of the city.

Turkey as a whole is emerging as the destination of choice for a wide range of medical procedures.

But Diarra isn’t the only one to die after taking a trip for a procedure there. In January, a postmortem found that Abimbola Ajoke Bamgbose, originally from Nigeria but living in the UK, died from peritonitis and multi-organ failure after complications from liposuction.

The 38-year-old social worker and mother-of-three, died in August 2020 after buying an overseas package deal for treatment.
